The federal Clean Water Act requires states to develop water quality standards to protect water resources for the public’s use and enjoyment and to sustain aquatic life such as fish, aquatic plants, and invertebrates. Every three years, states are required to review their water quality standards and provide an opportunity for the public to comment on the need for any changes or additions. The 2020-2021 Triennial Standards Review fulfills this requirement.
