Include CURE in your will or estate plan.
For over thirty years, CURE has been working to protect what we love most about Minnesota’s communities, land, and water and championing an energy transformation that prioritizes the needs of all people.
This vital work is an investment in the future, one that will profoundly impact the next generation. By including CURE in your will or estate plan, you can help ensure that our legacy of protecting Minnesota continues for years to come.
We encourage you to speak with a knowledgeable, reputable financial advisor or insurance agent today to help you decide which gift is best for you and your family. Your support will help us continue our mission and make a lasting difference.
Planned giving options include:
This is a gift of stock or mutual funds to CURE.
When you give appreciated securities, you may receive an immediate tax deduction and savings on capital gains taxes. Your gift of stock or mutual funds can also be used to fund a charitable gift annuity. You can make a gift of appreciated securities to CURE while diversifying your portfolio and/or securing a stream of income.
The simplest and most common planned gift is made through a donor’s will.
Make a Gift for the Future
A bequest is one of the simplest ways to support the important work CURE does. Through your thoughtful gift, you can ensure that CURE can continue to work to protect what we love most about Minnesota’s communities, land, and water and champion an energy transformation that prioritizes the needs of all people— now and for future generations.
If you have remembered CURE in your will or revocable charitable trust, please let us know so we can properly thank you and welcome you into our Living Waters Circle.
Donor Benefits:
- Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime.
- You can modify your bequest if your circumstances change.
- You can direct your bequest to a particular purpose (be sure to check with CURE to be sure your gift can be used as you intend).
- There is no upper limit on the estate tax deducted that can be taken for charitable bequests.
You know that your gift will benefit CURE and rural Minnesota future generations. Find the legal language and tax ID here.
A Bequest is a Simple Gift
A charitable bequest is a perfect way to help CURE build long-term financial stability when you are not able to make a significant gift today. A bequest under your will or revocable trust can complement your lifestyle and commitments today while supporting the work CURE does across Minnesota.
Donors choose a bequest because
- It is not payable until death, so it does not affect your assets or cash flow during your lifetime.
- It is revocable – you can change the provisions in your will or trust at any time, and
- It is private – your will is not filed or made public until your death.
Let us know if you have chosen to leave a bequest to CURE.
Your giving options are increased
- A bequest can deliver a specific gift to CURE (“I bequeath the sum of Ten Thousand [$10,000] Dollars”). Alternately, it can deliver a percentage of the balance remaining in your estate after taxes, expenses and specific bequests have been paid — what’s known as the residue (“I bequeath Ten [10%] Percent of the residue of my estate”).
- You can designate that a particular program or activity at CURE benefit from your gift. Or, you can make your bequest unrestricted and allow us to use it for our top conservation priorities when we receive your gift.
Is a bequest tax deductible?
A bequest from a will or a trust distribution to CURE is fully deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit on the deduction your estate can claim. In addition, the gift is usually exempt from state inheritance taxes.

A gift annuity allows a donor to make a meaningful gift to CURE and receive payments for life, plus tax benefits.
Charitable trusts are established through a trust company on behalf of CURE.
What is the difference between a will and a charitable trust?
A will is your instruction manual to survivors about how you want your property distributed. It is a revocable, private document that only takes effect after your death.
A revocable trust is an entity that holds assets during your lifetime, then transfers ownership of them — or benefit from them — upon your death.
There is no difference between wills and trusts in how they make charitable transfers. In some states, the probate and distribution process is simpler with a revocable trust. Your advisors can guide you in choosing which vehicle will work better for you.

Planning points
- The more narrowly you restrict the use of your bequest, the greater the risk that the program you want to benefit today won’t be as vital or as relevant when we receive your gift in the future. Please talk with us as you are drafting your will if you want to restrict the use of your bequest.
- The remaining balance in your retirement plan makes a tax-wise gift to CURE, but don’t direct it to us through your will or trust – that will include the plan in your taxable estate. Use your plan’s successor beneficiary form, instead.
What if I’ve already written my will or trust?
You can amend a will or trust to make a gift without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest to us while reaffirming the other terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add CURE as a beneficiary.
Substantial gifts can be made through life insurance policies naming CURE as the beneficiary.
Other Ways to Give When You Update Your Financial Documents
Did you know that you can set aside even a part of your 401(k) or life insurance policy as a gift to CURE? It’s very easy to do. Here’s how:
- Ask your fund manager or human resources department for the beneficiary form.
- You name CURE as a beneficiary of all or part of your 401(k), life insurance policy or other qualified account.
- You return the form to your fund manager or Human Resources department, and then we hope you will let us know about your gift.
- If you are naming us as a beneficiary of your 401(k), there may be an additional step. Please contact us for details.
Donate residential, commercial or undeveloped real estate and provide support for conservation while saving on taxes and reducing responsibilities associated with property ownership.
Do you own residential, commercial or undeveloped property that you no longer wish to maintain or that you are interested in donating after your lifetime?
Your gift of real estate can be a gift for future generations!
By donating all or part of your property to CURE you may be able to:
- Reduce your capital gains tax
- Receive an income tax deduction
- Receive income for life
More importantly, the impact of your gift will support our vital work to protect what we love.
There are two ways to support CURE through real estate gifts:
Land that donors would like permanently protected. Because our mission is conservation and we can accept a gift and work with you to get it put into permanent easements with the proper authority. Not all donations of land are eligible for these programs and each will be reviewed on an individual basis.
Land that is gifted for the purpose of leaving a legacy that will provide long-term financial security to CURE and the work we do. This is a gift that the donor understands that we will sell the property with the proceeds going to support the work that CURE does. We consider first and second homes, apartments, retail buildings as well as land.
For your real estate gifts – please call CURE and we will work with you to make your donation – your legacy that supports our work across Minnesota.
Benefit the what we love most about Minnesota and future generations by naming CURE as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401k and other qualified plans through this tax-efficient gift.
