This event will feature Josephine Marcotty and Dave Hage (co-authors of Sea of Grass) and Dr. Susan Colvin (Minnesota State University-Mankato) and Leigh Currie from the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy. This event will explore how we have altered how water flows in the Minnesota River Basin, the ecological benefits and threats to the prairie pothole region and where we go from here.  MCEA & CURE will talk about our recent work with drainage and the Attorney General’s Task Force on the Future of Minnesota’s Water that both organizations were active in shaping.

Speakers:

Sue Colvin is a Stream Ecologist and Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Minnesota State University – Mankato. Her Research Interests focus on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems, especially headwaters and fish assemblages including imperiled species.	Josephine Marcotty is an award-winning environmental journalist who has spent her life in the Midwest. She was a reporter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, where she covered complex, science-based topics. “Sea of Grass” is a natural expansion of her reporting on the vanishing prairie and the consequences of intensive agriculture. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband.	Dave Hage oversaw environmental and health reporting at the Minneapolis Star Tribune for a dozen years, editing projects that won a Pulitzer Prize and an Edward R. Murrow Award, among other honors. His previous books include “No Retreat, No Surrender: Labor’s War at Hormel,” and “Reforming Welfare by Rewarding Work.” He lives in St. Paul with his wife.
Leigh Currie has a B.S. in environmental science and biology from Tufts University and an M.S. in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota. Leigh graduated salutatorian in 2006 from William Mitchell College of Law. In addition to her time at MCEA, Leigh has also clerked for the Minnesota Court of Appeals, practiced environmental law at a private firm, worked as an adjunct law professor, and served as a Special Assistant Attorney General at the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.	Peg Furshong is a graduate from Montana State University – Billings with a M.S. in Educational Leadership. During her tenure at CURE, her work has always evolved around the health of our water in Minnesota and the landscapes that support a healthy and vibrant ecosystem.  She is a Master Naturalist instructor for the Prairie & Potholes Biome through the U of MN Extensions Department.
